PSHCE/RSE Intent at Alderton Junior School
PSHCE and RSE (Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economics Education and Relationships and Sex Education) is central to all aspects of pupil learning at The Alderton Junior School, both in the classroom and beyond.
Our aim is to enable our pupils to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society once they leave at the end of KS2. We strive to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to access the wider curriculum and prepare children to be global citizens whilst continuously empowering pupils’ self-confidence and self-esteem for them to communicate their needs and boundaries. We endeavour to teach our pupils how to be safe, explore the complexity of relationships and understand how to develop healthy relationships, both now and throughout their future lives.
PSHCE Curriculum Summary
We use a two-year spiral approach to PSHCE and RSE, using the PSHCE Cambridge Scheme and the Government-recommended Medway Scheme. PSHCE is taught weekly through structured lessons and activities. All year groups study the same topics during the year, but each topic is revisited at a deeper level as the children move further up the school. This means that by the time the children leave at Year 6, the essential skills and attributes that young people need to manage their lives both now, and in the future, are embedded.
British Values are taught explicitly within PSHCE as well as during class discussions and through assemblies. These values are modelled throughout the year by all members of staff and as well as through our democratic school council.
As part of our curriculum, we have built strong relationships with external agencies to work collaboratively with to provide our children with meaningful learning experiences that connect their classroom learning and real-life experiences. These agencies include Essex Fire and Rescue, Guide Dogs’ Trust, MIND, My Bank and the NSPCC. These sessions are engaging and accessible for all pupils.
School Council
We have an effective and enthusiastic School Council who are key to ensuring pupil voice is heard throughout the school as well as newly appointed Peer Mediators to support children manage conflict within the playground.

No Outsiders
As part of our personal development curriculum and preparing our pupils to be global citizens, both the Alderton Infant and Junior Schools have implemented the ‘No Outsiders' programme within our schools. The vision of No Outsiders is to promote inclusivity and community cohesion by teaching various themes to all pupils through a range of 42 children’s books throughout their time in primary school.
Once per half term in a PSHCE lesson, the children from Reception up to Year 6 share a story and consider a theme of inclusion. As schools, we already have strong, inclusive ethos and by further embracing these principles, we will ensure our schools continue to be a safe space for all, where no child or member of our community is treated as an outsider. These messages will be reinforced in regular school assemblies linking to themes of inclusion, diversity and equality through age appropriate, real life news stories.
RSE
Relationships and Sex Education is now a compulsory part of the National Curriculum (September 2020) and The Alderton Junior School encourages parental discussion regarding the new changes. Parental consultations will take place on a yearly basis in Years 5 and 6 regarding this area of the curriculum to ensure we are meeting the needs of all children on their journey through the school.
