Music Intent at Alderton Junior School
Alderton’s philosophy of music education is based on the principle that it should be fun and engaging for all students. Every child is born a musician and music plays such a key role in everybody’s life. For that reason, the academic year is split into six units, each focusing on a different element of music. Within these units, pupils are taught how to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control. They will develop an understanding of musical composition, organising and manipulating ideas within musical structures and reducing sounds from aural memory.
The Lion Pathway curriculum that we follow here at Alderton follows a spiral approach to musical learning. This involves children revisiting, building and extending on their knowledge and skills incrementally. Implementing all of this will inspire inquiry, critical thinking, deepen their musical understanding, connection with their place in communities, and their ability to perform and sing.
