Art Intent at Alderton Junior School

The Alderton Junior School Art curriculum has  been designed to develop learners who are confident across all areas of art and design and allow all children to experience the many forms of art; mark making, drawing, ceramics, textiles, printing and painting. Students will learn how to mix colours and respond to the work of other artists and cultures as well as creating 3-dimensional work, ensuring everyone has a chance to experiment and build on their skills.

We follow the Lion Pathways curriculum for Art which makes it easy to visualise a wide range of content and allows the children to dive deeper into their learning.

Art and Our School Values

The study of Art is intrinsically linked to our school values, serving as a powerful medium through which children develop these essential qualities:

  • Perseverance & Resilience: Creating art often requires students to grapple with difficult techniques and materials. They demonstrate Perseverance as they repeat attempts to master a specific skill (e.g., in ceramics or printing) and exhibit Resilience when work doesn't go as planned, requiring them to learn from mistakes and adapt their approach. The encouragement to respond to feedback and make relevant improvements is a direct exercise of both values.

  • Curiosity & Engagement: Students deepen their knowledge and understanding through experimentation and investigation, which are driven by Curiosity. By responding to the work of different artists and cultures, they actively Engage with the world around them, exploring diverse concepts and visual languages.

  • Aspiration & Independence: The curriculum fosters Aspiration by challenging students to achieve high-quality results in various forms, from drawing to complex 3D work. Independence is developed as children make their own creative choices, select appropriate materials, and manage the process of creating a piece of art from initial idea to final completion.

Curriculum Context and Wellbeing

The art topics support the wider creative curriculum of the school, allowing children to deepen their knowledge and understanding through experimentation and investigation. The children are encouraged to respond to feedback and make relevant improvements to their work, thereby developing their skills further.

Art lessons also support our children's social and emotional wellbeing by allowing them the freedom to communicate in a range of different ways, providing an important outlet for self-expression.
